1:45 pm Vegetarian & Vegan

Oli sykes lover :D asked:

Well, since I started being a vegetarian for a while now.
when I first told my mom, she got all mad telling me that it was
stupid, and odd.
She’s mexican so basically she never really never been introduced
to that kind of life style.
She tells me a sort of negative things about me being vegetarian.
And I’m not going to eat meat because she dissaproves,
I love being meat free :) How can I convince her that it isn’t bad?

do you really need to convince her? she’s going to have her opinions just as you are. let it go, she’ll get used to it sooner or later

Start buying your own groceries and cooking your own meals. When you do all this and are still healthy, I’m sure your mom will then have no problem with you being a Vegetarian.

Well, what, exactly, are her problems with it? If she believes you will be depriving yourself of protein by not eating meat, tell her it’s easy to get your protein from nuts, seeds, tofu, and certain veggies. If she doesn’t like that you’re doing it because it’s a lifestyle she’s not used to, she’ll just have to get over it, because that’s not a valid criticism of your decision.

Hope I helped!

show her that you arent just being the “beige” vegetarian. the type of kid that only eats macaroni and mayonnaise sandwiches..
show her a meal plan that you’ve drawn out.. all the healthy well balanced items a complete vegetarian meal can offer.. beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, tofu, soy, salads, whole meals, whole grains, fruits, juices, etc.. and show her like for example what you plan on eating for breakfast lunch and dinner.. Be willing to explore recipes and start learning to cook at home more to make sure its all healthy. Have her suggest more mexican dishes with vegetables.. I love refried beans (made with olive oil of course).. you can eat this on corn tortillas with salsa, lettuce, tomatoes and avocodo.. mmmm!..

You may never convince her, but stick to your guns. Cook your own food and follow a healthy vegetarian diet. She will eventually see you are still healthy and break down, or she won’t. It doesn’t really matter, you can’t force your opinions or lifestyle on anyone else.

You can expect her to respect your choices in life. That’s the beauty of it, we are all free to choose our own path. I would talk to her and let her know you are serious about this choice and you want her to respect that.

There’s really very little you can do. Food prejudices are some of the most deeply ingrained in any human society. Which makes sense when you consider that food is actually something that we absolutely require in order to live. Food is important, and therefore our attitudes about it are important–even if they are based on information that may not be strictly correct.

On the other hand, if you’re not living in your mother’s house, maybe the best thing is just not to bring it up again. If she brings it up to you, just tell her that your last check-up was fine, and assure her that you are well and happy. Assuming that your mother really does just want the best for you, she will hopefully begin to see for herself that you are ok, and will at least quit nagging you about it.

I know what you are going through because my husbands family are mexican and they think I’m crazy for being vegan.

You just have to show her the facts. There are studies that vegetarians have high IQ’s, are less likely to get certain cancers and diseases such as diabetes.

Offer to cook your own food.

A balanced vegan diet it the best thing you can do for your body. I know you’re vegetarian, so you can tell her that you won’t be missing out on protein or calcium because you will get it from dairy and eggs. Instead of eating extra vegetables.

My friend Marissa’s mom forced her to eat meat. She made her eat it, and if she didn’t she wasn’t allowed to leave the house. You’re lucky enough that you have it as you do. Also, you may never convince her, but good luck!

According to the American Dietetic Association “…appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.”

Tell her you are pregnant - wait 10 minutes then tell her you are joking - that will put it into perspective for her - unless she wants to be a grandmother!
Seriously - show her evidence that your diet is healthy, popular as a choice and easy to maintain!
Point out how cruel it is to kill animals for “taste” and that we are all descendants of them!

Failing that just ignore her - parents are only human after all - we love them completely, but they are not always right! You are actually growing wise as an independent person by having a mind and opinion of your own!

My mum (British for mom) said something similar and I’m 32 and married!
