3:16 am Vegetarian & Vegan

Peaches asked:

I’m mainly just curious because I honestly don’t believe any of that animal cruelty is right. I also am considering being a vegetarian, but I’m not sure if I can. Like I’m a poor college student and I live in Texas where everything is based around meat. I think its a great idea, but I’m not sure if in my stage in life if I can handle it.

i wish to God there was a “blind onion” (a vegan joint) on every corner there is a mcDonalds on

ps.. i commend McDonalds on all their healthy alternatives … but it’s not going to make much difference if and until, all that is added to their 99 cents menu imo

I gave up beef about 7 years ago. Gave up pork too.

Many people **** PETA who feel guilty for being unwilling to make sacrifices to help animals.

Just because you don’t believe in animal cruelty doesn’t mean you shouldnt eat meat.. I eat meat and i don’t like to see raccoons killed to make a jacket, but that’s different from receiving necessary nutritional benefits from animals. Its either you hunt the animal to get the meat, or someone else does it for you and provides for everyone else.

You need to understand that being vegetarian is a very difficult lifestyle to maintain healthily. when your a vegetarian you need to make sure your getting enough protein, amino acids, fatty acids, iron etc. its not as easy as simply saying only vegetables. Besides your only hurting yourself if you go vegan just to spite the meat industry.

Well, it won’t be easy to be honest. I’m a student as well, and often it has been hard to maintain. It’s just question of how much it matters to you. If it does, you’ll figure out a way to do so.

Honestly, what it requires is a little bit of meal planning, and care. Often some vitamin supplements can also help and are often cheap.

im a student too but im pescetarian but i do eat turkey meat. i dont believe in animal CRUELTY but i just converted from eating meat i hardly ate any meat at home maybe a steak once a week with ocassional chicken but now im eating more fish and im trying to eliminate the turkey meat. pasta is a vegetarian meal-its cheap but its fattening so eat it for lunch so you can burn the calories off.
eat BEANS-theyre cheap and a good substitute for meat.
eat lots of soups(like broths vegetable broth, and v8 just came out with some soups in broth boxes which are delicious and vegetarian!)
the thing about being vegetarian is you’re going to have to get protein or else you’ll just end up snacking so eat nuts(reasonably priced), tofu, oatmeal, yogurt. buying meat is actually expensive esp for a college student. like someone else suggested try buying the vegetarian substitutes you can at cheap places like mcdonalds.
i recommend that site!

I respect those that make any choices in their lives for moral reasons and this includes those vegetarians that chose the diet based on moral principles. I personally have not been so convicted as yet.

One thing you should know. Eating vegetarian is CHEAPER than eating meat, so that should be a benefit to you as a student. Living in a carnivorous environment will make it a little harder, but not impossible. Nearly every restaurant has veggie options, even if sometimes you just have to eat a salad. The key is planning. If you’re going to a friend’s for a meal make sure they know you are veggie and will have food for you. A lot of people cook veggies with meat products that may be on your list of restrictions. Offer to bring a dish to share so you know what you’re eating meets your standards and they don’t feel put out.

If you try it out and slip don’t be discouraged. It’s happens and it’s ok. You can always change your mind or re-commit.

I absolutely love it. I am a member of PETA, and own various t-shirts with the PETA logos too (thanks, Forever 21!).

Contrary to popular belief, a Vegetarian is not unhealthy. Anyone can be unhealthy if they chose to. I get more protein in my diet now then when I ate meat years ago. I look at things differently, and being an animal lover all my life as well as a previous Vet medicine major, I know the inside stories to farms or butcher shops.

I know a lot of meat eaters will say that since they didn’t do the killing, it’s OK. Not so. You are supporting that killing. Say you hire someone to go kill a human being. Does that make it OK because you yourself didn’t get blood on your hands? Animals have a heart too and again, contrary to popular belief, they CAN feel pain (I worked at an animal clinic/hospital also).

The percentage of vegans in society is below 1 %, they are UK figures, but I have friends who were vegans and they eventually went back to eating meat. It really is a personal belief. If you really have faith in your beliefs you will stick with it, but it can’t be easy changing a lifestyle. I’ve been to the States like Texas in the US and Canada. They pride themselves on the beef they rear. If you are not committed then it is going to be difficult for you.

Edit: to the answer above me. I accept that animals have to die so we can have meat, but that doesn’t mean they have to be abused. Pet owners sometimes abuse their pets. Worse than that, in 1939 all our ancestors went to war to fight ******. Many of our ancestors killed other humans so we could live. If all killing is wrong, where do people stand on that one.

I love being a vegetarian. If I was to eat meat again I would feel so bad about eating a poor defenceless animal.
I would maybe eat meat again if they didn’t treat the animals so bad, bad not after seeing what they do to the animals would i ever eat meat again.
+I love PETA! they’re great and I’m so glad they’re out there helping the animals !
And if you’re comitted you can definatly handle it !
I promise it’s not as hard as it seems
xx

Just remember, almost everyone else on the planet eats meat. So when you buy food from the shop, no matter what it is, animals were killed somewhere along the way (feed the farmers, feed the truck drivers, etc)

I’m a veggie and I really don’t like Peta. I feel they’ree extremists.
My uncle is a dairy farmer. When I travel to see him and my granny I pass field after field of cows. That contradicts with Peta’s message (all cows spend their lives in sheds)
Last time I was in his house, he let me go see one of the newborn calves. It was with his mother and his father was a bull, also living on the farm. They were in a field, eating grass. Even more contradictions (calves separated at birth, cows artificially inseminated).

I was on the farm for an hour, and I found so many contradictions to Peta’s message. I can’t help but doubt everything that they say now.

Honestly, I think groups like PETA are the downfall of democracy. First off, I DO NOT support cruelty to animals, & have been a practicing vegetarian for about 13 years now. Food is a little cheaper, & I think you can manage it even being in college. I remember ordering Bigmac’s w/no meat & substituting morning-star veggie burgers at home. Tofu is excellent if you get bored with food quickly because you can do something different with it every night. Where there is a will there is a way.
As for PETA, cruelty to animals shouldn’t be tolerated as a society & those guilty of it should be given counseling & treatment & if applicable probation, But under no circumstances should the life of an animal be held in higher regards than that of a human being. The punishment should fit the crime, yes but it should be within reason, or be deemed reasonable & appropriate by the average person. The most recent case of which was Mike Vick, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons. PETA goes too far, WAY too far & they have hidden agendas & I can prove it. Taking the exapmle with M. Vick; he was wrong & in all honesty I believe his sentence was too stringent & here’s why. We live in a country were **** fighting is legal. **** fighting is the act of fighting 2 adult male roosters, very prominent in caribbean, hispanic & Latin American cultures(I am born to Italian & Puerto Rican parents). PETA has nothing worth mentioning to say about this bloodsport. I grew up knee deep in the sport & have never seen or heard of PETA. The sport is popular in the southern US from Calif. to Florida, again where is PETA? Peta is selective in what it enforces & choses to recognize as “cruelty to animals”. Sure throw the book at Vick for dogfighting, shame on him. Meanwhile, the entire hispanic community goes to cockfights every sunday afternoon, & mum’s the word. I have pits & they fight, not to the death or anything, but its what comes natrual to them. Tired of the BS with this group; Thank God none of these extremists live around me anymore, could’nt take the cockfights every sunday in the backyard I suppose, LMAO!!!!

Peta is a pretty awful organization. All the reasonable vegetarians and vegans I know (a lot) agree. All they do is alienate people and go way way too far. Ethical treatment for animals is great, that organization is not.

I’m not vegetarian, but I don’t eat a lot of meat for health and environmental reasons. If you don’t think you can handle being a vegetarian, just try to cut back on meat and see how it goes. Eat as little as you can healthfully. Better to just cut back than to decide not to become vegetarian and keep eating meat three times a day, right?

only people that arent vegan/veg **** PETA. I dont **** them.

PETA has lots of company scandals. Everyone’s a hypocrate.
I support the ASPCA, & it’s a shame there isn’t one in every providence of every company, & only 2 or 3 full forces here in America.

You can save a lot of money by cutting meat out of your diet, but you will have to eat 3 times as much food & take dietary suppliments. Veggie burgers are quite good, but no two brand’s taste anything alike. I’ve also heard about vegetarian corn dogs, if you can find them in the freezer section.
