1:14 am Dogs
I am a vegetarian (almost vegan) but I don’t feed my dogs a vegetarian diet. Dogs really do best on meat based diets. Yes, there are dogs on record that have lived very long lives on a vegetarian diet, but there are also dogs that have lived long lives on nothing but scraps. Doesn’t mean it is a good idea.

I don’t understand this? Dogs aren’t vegetarians, is there a reason why you want to? Dogs are meant to eat meat.

…dogs aren’t herbivores. Don’t force your eating habits upon the animal. Dogs need meat and even if I wasn’t a supporter of raw feeding I would still tell you that you need to feed your dog what it needs
If you want a vegetarian pet get a rodent an iguana, a fish or a turtle

there’s no such thing as “balanced” vegetarian dog food. dogs cannot get proper nutrition from vegetables and it’s cruel to deny your carnivore the meat it MUST eat to survive. corn and wheat cause skin allergies, kidney disease, obesity, and numerous other health problems in carnivores (dogs and cats). dogs didn’t ask to become domestic pets, that was a human choice, the fact that they NEED meat to survive is NOT a choice.. it’s a requirement. humans have the ability to get nutrients from sources they choose… dogs do not. it’s very unfair to your dog to force your way of life on him when it’s clearly unhealthy and not safe. if you do not want your dog to eat meat get a rabbit or a hamster

Dogs need meat.
No 2 ways about it.
They can’t digest soy or any other plant protein. Some dogs are actually allergic.
Look into Innova, California Natural, Wellness and Canidae. They’re high quality and very good.
Artemis is holistic and only uses free-range, human grade meat.

Sorry to say it, but a dog is a carnivore.
If you are low enough to force your dog to have to eat like you, then you shouldnt have a dog. Thats like your family forcing you to eat meat. It isnt right.
Look into evo or something along those lines. The have quality ingredients in them that were probably raised humanely. The company is very picky about ingredients.

~ I feel for you.
I’m vegan and had looked into Vegetarian dog food. I found a few, and tried it but it was short lived. It is just not a healthy diet for a dog. I have now gone completely the other way and feed a grain free diet (as much meat as possible). My dogs are thriving. I still don’t eat meat, and it is great for me but it is not a diet for a dog.
Now, if for some reason your dog has a problem with meat and needs to be on a vegetarian diet, then I could understand wanting to try out a food that promotes that.
AvoDerm is an excellent food (all their foods are) They have one that is vegetarian and it is a trusted name.
There are a few others if you don’t like this one.
>I personally would not use this one, I don’t like the ingredients in comparison to the AvoDerm, but it is another one. It is vegan-

Avoderm offers a vegetarian dry food. However, I wouldn’t feed JUST a vegetarian diet to a dog. I would mix in pure meat (chicken, turkey, beef - cooked or raw) to ensure proper protien and nutrition.

I feed my dogs a meat-based diet (even though I personally choose to eat a quasi-vegan diet)
You can, however, contact Animal Care Foundation and ask for vegan dog food information.

Dogs need meat in their diet.

Unless your dog has a medical reason (such as an intolerance to meat protein- it does happen) he would be much better off on a quality diet that includes meat protein.
Dogs are carnivores, and while they don’t have the high dietary requirement for meat that cats have, they do need meat-derived proteins in order to have the best quality, most balanced diet. I have heard of a handful of people successfully formulating a home-made, vegetarian diet for their dog, but again the dog had medical issues that made it necessary, and the dogs often do not “thrive” (shiny coat, lots of energy, well defined musculature) the way that a dog on a proper diet does.
I respect a human’s choice to refrain from eating meat…..but when we choose to keep a carnivorous animal as a companion and impose our dietary moral choices on that animal, it amounts to cruelty, IMO.

Dogs need meat. They are omnivores not vegetarians. It wouldn’t be healthy to have your dog on a vegetarian diet.
